It's all about the moment in between...
This is the Oates family. Molly and Jordan are expecting their second baby girl. Like any other shoot as I left their house I was thinking to myself what a beautiful family. I was also thinking about how Avery, the cute little girl in the poka dot dress, was frantically running around, like all toddlers do, during the session, I thought to myself, wow, I really love my job. Not only because of my love for photography, but because people are willing to let me in on a part of their day, no matter how hectic it may seem, and let me photographically document it.
SO...
I get home and I am starting to edit these photographs from the session then I came upon this image

Bam! It hit me. Now this is the example of why I do what I do. This lovely moment that is in between all the chaos of smiling and posing. This is the real moment that makes my heart soar when I start to edit and really look at what I got from the session. (sigh) This is the moment in between when life happens, humor happens, love happens. It's this moment that makes a beautiful shot my friends! As I look back over my work from other shoots, it's always there. I really think that this is what defines my work and what I really seek from a shoot. To capture people when they are in that moment. Don't get me wrong I love what happens in posed shots as well. Frankly, I understand that those are the images that will more than likely go up on the wall, and I really do love those also. But I encourage people to be themselves and really pay attention to those moments in between, take a breath and relax, because those moments are what in turn make the posed images even better. Thanks to the Oates family for beautiful images just by simply being yourselves.
